“..is the structure for Columbia Broadcast System..”
~Recently in my Introduction to Journalism class I watched a movie that has impacted journalism, especially in the United States of America. This movie is called Good Night and Good Luck. The movie was an interesting movie being that it was in black and white, as well as it was embracing the first style of news. The lasting impact that Ed R. Murrow has made that I was able to make a connection about was his series then now is the structure for Columbia Broadcast System, or CBS, 60 Minutes.
“In a nation terrorized by its own government..”
~Ed R. Murrow did not only impact journalism he impacted the daily life of every American that had access to a television. Edward R. Murrow initially received his spotlight after broadcasting World War II in the homes to a plentiful amount of investigative Americans. Up until this point television was used to bring the very popular radio broadcasted shows to receive a visual effect. Edward R. Murrow was not afraid to talk about what he passionately supported. “In a nation terrorized by its own government, one man dared to tell the truth. He took on the government with nothing but the truth”. Those are two themes that can summarize Edward R. Murrow.
“..I opt out of Senator, then I ask Mr. Murrow opt out..”
~He was a very risky man as well. Commonly he would insert his opinion into the news as editorial, but at the time having an opinion in delivering news was persuading the viewers with a biased opinion. Although, his job comes to a near risk of being fired he still has the drive to dig for the truth. The only response that Senator Joseph McCarthy delivered was after Reporter Edward R. Murrow did a half hour segment displaying how Senator Joseph McCarthy has no foundation of evidence for communism. Senator Joseph McCarthy stated that “If I give comfort to the enemy I opt out of Senator, then I ask Mr. Murrow opt out of being invited into a million homes.”
“..news must be delivered..”
~This movie has left an impact on the format of journalism news. For example, that news must be delivered without the reporter displaying any personal emotion with the story. This movie has also affected certain states laws regarding news. Another example of this is that certain states do not allow cameras, video recorders, or any jurors that have seen news related to a proceeding court case. This rule also applies to the Supreme Court.
